question on importing electronic goods from USA into UK?

August 19, 2009 - 5:32 pm 3 Comments

intended to buy something worth 1800 USD

how much would i need to pay in total?

and how did you work it out?

First you’ll need to add carriage, which won’t be cheap from the USA and, when it arrives you’ll pay Duty and VAT on the goods plus what you paid for shipping.

You will have to pay a combinaton of commision and/or a inflated "buy" rate on the exchange rate to whoever you purchase the US$ from to pay the vendor, be it your bank, credit card company, PayPal etc. On todays exchange rate of $1.98 you’ll probably end up buying at somewhere closer to $1.91.

When the goods arrive the first tax to be applied is Duty. How much you’re charged will depend on which TARIC code applies to your item – there are many different types of electrical goods and the rates vary from zero upwards. Audio/visual equipment tends to be about 14% so we’ll assume that.

HMRC will then add a further 17.5% VAT to the total.

When all that’s added up the carrier who collects the parcel for it’s last leg of the journey will have to pay HRMC on your behalf. They will charge a customs clearance fee for doing so which varies from around £8 to double that for express or high value shipments.

So, we’ll have to make some assumptions for your purposes but they shouldn’t be too far out.

Cost of goods = $1800
Shipping = $100
US$ to GBP @ $1.91/£ = £994.76
+ Duty @ 14% £139.27 = £1134.03
+ VAT @ 17.5% £198.46 = £1332.49
+ Customs Clearance £13.50 = £1345.99

You’ll probably need to factor in a little more to buy a 240V power supply, cable or adaptor to use it on UK mains.

In the 2007 ranking of World’s Top Ten Richest Countries, Luxembourg topped the list. Once bolstered by iron and steel industry, Luxembourg economy at present gains momentum by providing international banking and financial services. Luxembourg, whose population now enjoys high standard of living, is also a favorite destination among European countries for hosting political activities. Luxembourg, situated in northwestern Europe, is also one of the smallest countries of the world. Among other countries in the list, four are from Asia (Qatar, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and Singapore), one from Africa (Equatorial Guinea), three from Europe (Luxembourg, Norway and Ireland) and two from Americas (USA and Bermuda).

All the countries are fully or partially industrialized and none of them are agrarian. International financial services, tourism, petroleum and natural gas exports, electronic goods manufacturing, aiding movement of goods (as in the case of Singapore) and flourished service sector are the keystones behind this economic success.

Bermuda Tourism has gained tremendously from the small country’s strategic location in Atlantic Ocean. For travelers embarking on a tour of Bermuda, nonstop flights are available from eastern US cities like Chicago, New York, Washington DC as well as from Toronto, Halifax and London. There are also weekly cruises to three principal ports of this country.

What are the best places to see and the best places to shop, esp. electronic goods in Riyadh,Saudi Arabia?

August 9, 2009 - 4:34 pm 2 Comments

I’m in Riyadh now for some office work for a couple of months. Can anyone suggest me the places to see in Riyadh and Saudi Arabia ? And also any suggestions on shopping in Riyadh or even other places in Saudi ??
Got to know that there is no traveller’s visa to Saudi Arabia. So want to see as much as I can before leaving here.

Welcome To KSA, if you want just visit Riyadh, then go to Zoo, Nada or Salam park. Malls like Sahara, City plaza, Kingdom and Fasila are good…Geant and Carrefur also excellent place to visit or hang out, go for safari at Thamama desert. Beside all of this you must visit eastern places like khober, jubail, Al hasa etc. Rest Riyadh ppl are dry and arogant, not like eastern or western. Cheers!
