The CE marking (also known as CE mark) is a mandatory conformance mark on many products placed on the single market in the European Economic Area (EEA). The CE marking certifies that a product has met EU consumer safety, health or environmental requirements. CE stands for conformité européenne, French for "European conformity". By affixing the CE marking to a product, the manufacturer – on his sole responsibility – declares that it meets EU safety, health and environmental requirements.

As far as retail try Fry’s electronics, they have the best sales, and knowledgeable sales people. Not just college kids that need a part time job. Imagine it as Best Buy if all the store associates were Geek Squad.

I bought a used phone on ebay today and they added 15% tax! The seller is in Ontario and I am shipping it to NS. Every time this phone changes hands the gov’t is making 15% – is this correct? Or should I tell the seller they shouldn’t be charging me tax.

I could have sworn not. But looking at the CRA website I couldn’t find anything that says no GST/HST on used goods. That means that if the person selling the used goods is a GST/HST registrant they are required to collect the tax.

Since he is shipping to Nova Scotia, under the place of supply rules he has to charge Nova Scotia HST, which is 15%. You can ask for their GST/HST registration number to make sure they really are a registrant.

The tax would only be charged if the person selling it is registered. If a registrant pays GST/HST on it, they get that back as a credit. But, sure, if a phone is sold by a registrant there’s tax. And if later a registrant buys/acquires it and sells it, again, 15%. And there’s GST/HST on the phone service in the meantime.

Taxes are the price we pay for civilization. And you get what you paid for.

Why would someone buy them? Typically to save anywhere from 20% – 50% off new. Often times you can also get the full manufacturers warranty or, at the very least, 30 to 90 days of warranty from the date of purchase.

Yes it can be risky but you can also luck out and get a great item at huge savings.
