American Expats in China: Surge Protectors?

March 30, 2010 - 11:47 pm 4 Comments

My company has transferred me to Beijing and I will be moving there pretty soon. I’ve been told that electrical surges and outages are common in Beijing and that having surge protectors is a good idea.

My question is, should I bring some reliable surge protectors from the US to protect my electronic equipment or should I buy some in Beijing? I’m not sure if they sell them there. And secondly, can I use the ones I bring over from the US there without problems?

Thanks.

China’s major cities rarely have power disruptions. I have lived in Shanghai for 5 years and only experienced one brief power outage in that period (during a typhoon in 2005).

China has a different electrical system than the U.S., so American surge protectors are useless here. China’s voltage is double that in America (220 versus 110).

Surge protectors are always a good idea for expensive computer equipment and you can purchase whatever you need upon arrival here. Go to the electrical department of any major store and you will find excellent quality surge protectors. Tesco, Carrefour, Walmart, RTMart, TrustMart, and all of the big stores sell them.

I’d say a surge protector is a good idea regardless of where you live. You can buy them in China, and you can most definitely buy some in Beijing. I’ve done it.
