Why Do Japanese make better electronics and cars than US and Europe?

September 29, 2009 - 11:25 pm 19 Comments

How come they have the best electronics companies and most advanced car factories like Lexus? and how can they make them so reliable?

1. Ethics: They care about getting the job done properly rather than saving time for money.
2. They study and plan more than us and spend less time for luxuries.
But I think you are wrong about cars, when it comes to style, performance and power I would go for US or Germany, Beemer are classified as the best performance while Benz for style, but the american muscle are the most comfy and wild in the same time, Iexus is great car yes, and they have the most advanced automatic factory on this planet but they copy. others like Toyota, Mitsubichi, Nissan, Mazda,..etc are just cheap which is y they are the best selling. but do they have something like Ferrari or Lamborghini? I bet they can’t even imagine to design one. and if they do then they r copying. as for electronix, yes they do make them good, but ask yourself this: who made Intel, AMD, nVidia ATi, Motorola, Nokia, Mircosoft, Apple, Harman/Kardon, etc…???
all these are unique products if u know what I mean What i’m trying to say is that they are not smater than us or europe, they didn’t produce people like: Enstien, Newton, Rutherford or many other scientist, they were not the first to invent camera but sure Sony and Cannon make them the best these days (they copied the idea and made it smaller and better), which brings us back to the 1st point, Ethics. Sorry for the long (maybe boring) answer. I hope it helped though.

I think Europeans make the best cars but they definately have the US beat with electronics and cars.

I don’t mean to sound racist or anything but someone once told me that it is because they are shorter and are closer to what they are working on. Also the general perception of them is they are a smarter race than others.

The only thing the US is good at is marketing really, I am from Australia and we don’t import anything from america.

The Japanese DO NOT make better electronics abd cars. They make cheaper electronics and cars. The BEST watch today is still a Tissot or a Philip Patek or Omega. The cheapest are the Japanese ones. The best cars are still the Merc, the beemer, the Porsche, the Jaguar, the Rolls and the Bentleys. The cheapest are the Toyotas, the Nissan etc.
I hope u got my point.

Dunno, but longest lasting cars I’ve had was a ‘78 Chevy Nova (drove till 2002) and a ‘88 Mazda 929 (still driving).

The old Chevys and Fords were good, but this new stuff is like disposable "carware".

Now all the top re-sale value cars are Japanese (Toyota, Honda, Mazda…).

They’re so much smarter than us; we take life for granted while they study and study and get somewhere in life.

surly, japanies industry is on rise . they reason that they exeeded the other contries in their hard work. the japanies people are hardworker, who don’t mind working 16 hours daily!!

they are not the best designers, they are not best inventors. But they are the best to communicate and they have very high man-hour efficiency.

their industry reflects a "Japanese" way of management and planning through they have very tight place for storing: so they have to make best planning to buy-manufacture-sell with no storage time margin.
further more they have a policy in group working that they start in one task x with a big number of employees together and then start translating one employee after other to other tasks, at the end in task x only half of original number stay and they are doing the same work done before with double of their number

I agree with majorcavalry. By " better", you mean "better" in what sense? US has good electronics innovations too, like the ipod. The Japanese are good in churning out new products within shorter periods of time – part of their continuous improvement programs in their factories – they constantly evolve their products with new designs, new casings, smaller size, etc. They always make it a point to add value to their products. But US does that too – though they have selected another industry to channel their innovative talents in electronics and IT- entertainment, film and music. So I guess it’s a matter of choice and cultural preferences in channeling their strengths and competitiveness to specific industries.

Because they’re culturally more reserved, and have a stronger work ethic… worry more about doing a good job than being able to earn more money for less hours.

From what I recall when they designed the first Lexus, they looked at what their rivals at Mercedes & BMW, etc had to offer….. then set about tirelessly working on how to make their car better…… even down to noise the door makes when you slam it shut.

Japan has incessently attempted to produce better vehicles and electronics for the past 30 years.

American companies, especially vehicle manufacturors have been complacent and greedy. Management has been weak, and unions way too demanding.

They are now paying the price for their arrogance.

Because their work ethic is SO much better than ours. Yes, they do make the better stuff when it comes to electronics, the cars, wouldn’t know. In the US it’s all about money and impatience. In Japan it’s about getting the job done that they were given and getting it done right. Did you know that they don’t get paid over time? Yet they still stay hours after they get done with work. Do you know why? To get their job done. If we could get that kind of work ethic in America, then we’d once again be THE super power.

Well, everyone has to have something that their good at. Americans are great inventors, and that is undeniable. I would say that Japanese people are good at perfecting our inventions. America’s philosophy towards work is to find new ways to do things in less time, so that we can enjoy our lives. We fight for the time to enjoy our families and to relax–although it’s very hard. Do you realize many inventions where created by Black slaves that we use today, because they were looking for ways to do things more efficiently, due to the rigors of slavery??? Necesity is the mother of invention.

Does the world understand this??? Americans make money, but we also have to spend a ridiculous amount of money for healthcare, mortgages, taxes…and so on. It’s expensive to fight for good health in a country that people are to busy to even cook for themselves and enjoy time off from work. Most people I know get up to work, come home by eight pm, and go to sleep at ten, and wake up to do it again. But we enjoy our vacations and weekends off more, and treasure that instead of being the best. However, honestly, from what I see, if it takes living the lifestyle of workaholic Japanese to perfect cars and electronics, I don’t want it. I’ll keep my weekends and a little mediocrity for some time off of work.
