I bought a used phone on ebay today and they added 15% tax! The seller is in Ontario and I am shipping it to NS. Every time this phone changes hands the gov’t is making 15% – is this correct? Or should I tell the seller they shouldn’t be charging me tax.
I could have sworn not. But looking at the CRA website I couldn’t find anything that says no GST/HST on used goods. That means that if the person selling the used goods is a GST/HST registrant they are required to collect the tax.
Since he is shipping to Nova Scotia, under the place of supply rules he has to charge Nova Scotia HST, which is 15%. You can ask for their GST/HST registration number to make sure they really are a registrant.
The tax would only be charged if the person selling it is registered. If a registrant pays GST/HST on it, they get that back as a credit. But, sure, if a phone is sold by a registrant there’s tax. And if later a registrant buys/acquires it and sells it, again, 15%. And there’s GST/HST on the phone service in the meantime.
Taxes are the price we pay for civilization. And you get what you paid for.

Are those refurbished items things that stayed in store and needed repair, or are they items that people returned and needed repair, or both?
People return stuff for a reason, because they are crappy goods. Why would someone else want fixed up crappy equipment?
Refurbished items can be
1) customer returns due to customer changing their mind or the item was broken or any other condition covered that allows the return of the item or
2) store demo models
3) scratch and dent items
Why would someone buy them? Typically to save anywhere from 20% – 50% off new. Often times you can also get the full manufacturers warranty or, at the very least, 30 to 90 days of warranty from the date of purchase.
Yes it can be risky but you can also luck out and get a great item at huge savings.

The sales tax regn no: will safe guard you in so many aspects viz., check post authorities and sales tax depts. In fact the buyer in some cases will not entertain if there is not sales tax regn no: They buyer will ‘brand’ you as unregistgered dealer and he has to pay tax on your behalf and he will deduct from your invoice what he has shelled out.

electrical goods work on the effects of passage of electric current such as heating, magnetism etc. these effects are used in some form or the other. for example, toaster, air heater, geyser, soldering iron, iron box, electric stove etc make use of the heating effect of current. motors, transformers and generators make use of the magnetic effects of current.
electronic goods contain electronic devices such as ICs, transistors, and other electronic devices. when it comes to electronics, it is much more concerned with the flow of electrons rather than the bulk current flow. though flow of electrons constitutes an electric current, electronics deals with controlled flow of electrons through various electronic devices which act as amplifiers, regulators, sensors etc.
in short, electrical goods are based on the bulk flow of current whereas electronic goods deals with flow of electrons

what problem will price index computation face over the unstable price of DVD and HDTV.
Features change frequently. This year’s model delivers more value than last year’s at the same price, but it is treated as if it were the same item.

Government intervention (taxes, subsidies, or regulations)
None of the above
Consumer spending
Aggregate demand consists of four components: Consumer demand, investment demand, government purchases, and net exports (exports minus imports).
A rush by consumers to spend would clearly fall under the category of consumer spending,

Get a renter’s insurance policy – it will cover your laptop and everything else in your rental in case of theft, fire, flood, etc. If you want to back up the information on your laptop, try Carbonite.com, which is an online site that keeps all your info in case your laptop is stolen or damaged.
